Catching Up With Giovanna Battaglia

Mamma mia! To say I am behind in my posts is a gigantic understatement! It is time to catch up with Giovanna Battaglia, the life of the party in New York City. Molto grazie to our editor-at-large Gala, bellissima e brillante, for sending me many of the photographs that you see here.

6 June: For the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards at Lincoln Center, Giovanna chose to shine in an emerald green dress by Dolce & Gabbana from their Fall/Winter 2011/2012 collection. Anderson Cooper hosted the event at which top honors went to Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for Womenswear Designer of the Year, Michael Bastian for Menswear Designer of the Year, Alexander Wang for Accessory Designer of the Year, and Marc Jacobs for Lifetime Achievement.

8 June: Mark Lee of Barneys New York hosted a private dinner in honor of L'Wren Scott and Style.com threw a party at the James Hotel in honor of their new collaboration with Natalie Joos — Giovanna was of course on hand for both events. She looked chic for summer in an embellished green tunic with loafers.

9 June: Richard Nicoll and Jonathan Saunders celebrated the launch of their respective resort collections at the Bowery Hotel; Giovanna was stunning in a silver dress by Richard Nicoll paired with loafers. Among the party people: Derek Blasberg, Jen Brill, Harley Viera Newton, Nicola Formichetti, Chris Bollen, Hilary Rhoda, and Terry Richardson.

That concludes our peek at Giovanna's party life, but before I go — What's with the loafers?

Giovanna Battaglia: La Carmen Miranda

Giovanna Battaglia is the brilliant stylist behind the editorial "La Carmen Miranda" for the June issue of Vogue Gioiello. Giovanna takes inspiration from the legendary samba singer and actress Carmen Miranda to showcase the bright colors and fruity fashion currently in season. Known as "The Brazilian Bombshell," Miranda was famous for her towering fruit headdresses and platform sandals and I think she would have loved the outfits Gio has chosen. Very special thanks to Gala for sending me these wonderful images.

Giovanna Battaglia: Sixties Glamour

Today's special post by our lovely editor-at-large Gala compares Giovanna Battaglia to several icons of 1960s glamour with a particular focus on her similarities to Audrey Hepburn. Thank you kindly for this beautiful look at the past and the future of fashion, Gala; thank you for your wonderful translation from Italian to English, Isabelle. Enjoy!

Giovanna Battaglia À La Hepburn
By Gala

Monica Vitti, Mina Mazzini ed ora.... Audrey Hepburn!

Monica, Mina, and now... Audrey Hepburn! All style icons of reference and sources of inspiration for Giovanna Battaglia. Since with Monica Vitti we have already identified some unknown parallels of style, poses, and imagination (see: Giovanna Battaglia À La Vitti), for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala, Giovanna was clearly inspired by the legendary “Tiger of Cremona” (the nickname by which the Italian singer Mina is known nationally) at the height of her splendour, arriving at the magnificent exhibition in honor of the brilliant and late lamented Alexander McQueen, with an exclusive long evening gown by MARNI and accessories to match, which personally made me think of the creativity of Princess Irene Galitzine and the evening wear of the exceptional Lee Radziwill, typical of the mythical 1960s.

This splendid dress from the Fall/Winter 2011 collection, its rich simplicity highlighted by jewels and crystals that covered in entirety the geometric shapes of the fabric, a trademark of the creativity of Consuelo Castiglioni (who was also in her company), was paired with a hairstyle that was very in vogue during those years; a typical “beehive” so dear to high class women, especially in the south of Italy, which emphasizes Giovanna’s origins, and makes it possible for her to be both a marvelous “Brasiliana” for Carla Amorim and the sacred and princessly “Frida Kahlo” for Eddie Borgo under the artistic direction of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.

This proves, now more than ever, the versatility of the face of Giovanna, and her style, particularly when it is simple and classic, is always full of echoes of references and quotations that can also refer to a romantic Audrey Hepburn, which can be drawn from her tender portrait “Beautiful & Funny” by Mauro Mongiello in April 2010 or from her choices to dress herself, again with the stylistic fantasies of her accomplices at Dolce & Gabbana and their splendid Fall/Winter 2009 collection, in which they sent down the catwalk grieving madonnas in nightgowns and palazzo pyjamas, adorned with pseudo-ex-marks and echoes of geishas, which resemble Audrey’s profile on break at the Warner Bros studios while she strolls in a nightgown during takes of My Fair Lady.

Battaglia And Roitfeld At amfAR Cinema Against AIDS

Giovanna Battaglia is perfectly attired in what Cathy Horyn describes as an "abstract nothing-of-a-dress" conjured by Stephen Sprouse.
