Today's special post by our lovely editor-at-large Gala compares Giovanna Battaglia to several icons of 1960s glamour with a particular focus on her similarities to Audrey Hepburn. Monica Vitti, Mina Mazzini ed ora.... Audrey Hepburn! Icone di stile di riferimento e motivo di inspirazione per Giovanna Battaglia. Se con Monica Vitti abbiamo già individuato degli inconsapevoli parallelismi di stile, di pose, di fantasie (vedi: Giovanna Battaglia à la Vitti), per il Gala del Costume Institute Del Metropolitan Museum, Giovanna si inspira dichiaratamente alla mitica "Tigre di Cremona" (pseudonimo di battaglia con cui è nazionalmente conosciuta la cantante italiana Mina) dei suoi anni di massimo splendore, giungendo alla magnifica mostra, in onore del geniale e compianto Alexander McQueen, con un esclusivo lungo abito da sera di MARNI e relativi accessori in tema, che personalmente mi ha fatto ricordare la creatività della principessa Irene Galitzine e le mise da sera di una strepitosa Lee Radziwill, proprio in quei mitici anni '60.
Questo splendido vestito della collezione autunno-inverno 2011, la cui ricca semplicità era illuminata da pietre e cristalli che rivestivano interamente i motivi geometrici del tessuto, trademark della creatività di Consuelo Castiglioni (anche lei presente in sua compagnia), era accompagnato con una acconciatura molto in voga in quegli anni, una tipica "cofana" tanto cara alle donne di gran classe, soprattutto al Sud d'Italia, tanto per rimarcare le origini di Giovanna, che la rendono possibile sia come meravigliosa "Brasiliana" per Carla Amorim e sia come ieratica e principesca "Frida Kahlo" per Eddie Borgo, sotto la direzione artistica di Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.
Questo testimonia, ora più che mai, la versatilità del volto di Giovanna come testimonial, ed il suo stile, proprio quando resta semplice e classico, è sempre pieno di echi di riferimento e di citazioni che possono rimandare anche ad una romantica Audrey Hepburn, come si può dedurre dal tenero ritratto "Beautiful & Funny" che le fa Mauro Mongiello nell'aprile 2010 o dalle sue scelte di abbigliarsi, complici ancora una volta le fantasie stilistiche di Dolce & Gabbana e la loro splendida collezione autunno-inverno 2009, in cui mandarono in passerella delle Madonne Addolorate in vestaglia e pigiama Palazzo, adorne di pseudo-ex-voto e con echi da geisha, che ricordano il profilo di Audrey in pausa tra gli studios della Warners Bros mentre passeggia in vestaglia durante le riprese di My Fair Lady.

Monica, Mina, and now... Audrey Hepburn! All style icons of reference and sources of inspiration for Giovanna Battaglia. Since with Monica Vitti we have already identified some unknown parallels of style, poses, and imagination (see: Giovanna Battaglia À La Vitti), for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala, Giovanna was clearly inspired by the legendary “Tiger of Cremona” (the nickname by which the Italian singer Mina is known nationally) at the height of her splendour, arriving at the magnificent exhibition in honor of the brilliant and late lamented Alexander McQueen, with an exclusive long evening gown by MARNI and accessories to match, which personally made me think of the creativity of Princess Irene Galitzine and the evening wear of the exceptional Lee Radziwill, typical of the mythical 1960s.
This splendid dress from the Fall/Winter 2011 collection, its rich simplicity highlighted by jewels and crystals that covered in entirety the geometric shapes of the fabric, a trademark of the creativity of Consuelo Castiglioni (who was also in her company), was paired with a hairstyle that was very in vogue during those years; a typical “beehive” so dear to high class women, especially in the south of Italy, which emphasizes Giovanna’s origins, and makes it possible for her to be both a marvelous “Brasiliana” for Carla Amorim and the sacred and princessly “Frida Kahlo” for Eddie Borgo under the artistic direction of Julia Restoin-Roitfeld.
This proves, now more than ever, the versatility of the face of Giovanna, and her style, particularly when it is simple and classic, is always full of echoes of references and quotations that can also refer to a romantic Audrey Hepburn, which can be drawn from her tender portrait “Beautiful & Funny” by Mauro Mongiello in April 2010 or from her choices to dress herself, again with the stylistic fantasies of her accomplices at Dolce & Gabbana and their splendid Fall/Winter 2009 collection, in which they sent down the catwalk grieving madonnas in nightgowns and palazzo pyjamas, adorned with pseudo-ex-marks and echoes of geishas, which resemble Audrey’s profile on break at the Warner Bros studios while she strolls in a nightgown during takes of My Fair Lady.
