I am thrilled beyond words to feature the first installment of a lengthy interview with Alessia Giacobino, the creative force behind the Italian label JO NO FUI, who will present her latest collection today as part of Milan Fashion Week. The interview is conducted by Gala, our editor-at-large in Italy, and translated from Italian to English by Francesca Berti. Grazie mille to Alessia, Gala, and Francesca for this wonderful look at the fascinating world of JO NO FUI.
JO NO FUI e l’Estetica dell’Architetto
IWTBAB incontra Alessia Giacobino, spirito creativo di JO NO FUI
By Gala
Mi fa sempre molto piace vederla fotografata con capi JO NO FUI.
Oddio, interpretano JO NO FUI in modo molto diverso, è impossibile dire chi lo fa meglio.
JO NO FUI and the Aesthetic of the Architect
IWTBAB meets Alessia Giacobino, creative soul of JO NO FUI
By Gala
While awaiting the phone call of Alessia Giacobino, I flip through with interest the September 2011-2012 issue of ELLE Bride, the magazine of ELLE Italy that has decided to dedicate this second issue to “Big Loves of Fashion.” Inside is a beautiful special feature of the wonderful wedding which occurred last summer, in two parts, of the Rimini stylist and her longtime partner, Alessandro Squarzi, father of her five-year-old daughter Allegra. The memory of the video images of the lovely party dedicated to friends, in the exclusive Circolino del Molo in Castel di Mezzo, near Pesaro, is interrupted by the ringing of the telephone that is not long in coming. From the other end I am reached by the well-modulated voice of the beautiful Alessia, 38 years old, immediately friendly, she insists on using the familiar “you” as we are roughly the same age and is keen to stress that also for her this is a great pleasure meeting with us, even if, for now, it is only by telephone.
IWTBA… focuses on the style icons of our time. Carine Roitfeld, Emmanuelle Alt, Sofia Coppola, Giovanna Battaglia... What do you think about our various journals?
I just love them! Every time I am taking a break I go on the internet and check out fashion blogs, your IWTBA are among my favorite.
We will be interviewing you for the first time for I Want To Be A Battaglia, the journal that focuses on the style, the work, and the events which concern Giovanna Battaglia, always photogenic throughout the various Fashion Weeks and often wearing Alessia’s creations.
It’s great to see her photographed when she wears JO NO FUI.
Two other fascinating Italian women of the Vogue Japan entourage sometimes wear JO NO FUI: Viviana Volpicella and Aurora Sansone. In your personal blog you defined them as “friends.” Is this so? Which of these splendid interpreters most embodies the JO NO FUI woman that you send down the catwalk?
Oh dear, they interpret JO NO FUI in a totally different way, it’s impossible to tell who wears the brand better.
I have known Viviana and Aurora for a long time. Maybe even ten years for Aurora, since the moment I started to do that job. She was sharing an apartment with a girl who worked for me and we’ve always been in contact. I really like her sober elegance, I think she is a very elegant woman. She reminds me a bit of Lauren Hutton with her “en vogue” style, even mannish sometimes with her slouchy silk shirts.
Viviana is always radiant, like all Mediterranean women, I adore it. My grandmother was from Calabria so I, too, have South Italian origins, we could consider it a kind of link between us all.
