Giovanna Battaglia: Slipper Mania

Slipper Mania
By Gala

Giovanna Battaglia is among the jet-setters that love “metropolitan slippers,” as seen in the February 2012 issue of ELLE Italia in the special “What is new?” for the coming spring.

Luxurious and comfortable little slippers, not to be relegated to the domestic boudoir, but to show off with a quick pace on a thousand occasions. They are, in particular, refined creations rigorously hand-sewn with soft, quality materials, both in fabric and leather, almost always customized with figures and embroidery “sur mesure.” Their style reminds me a bit the moccasin or the Berber slipper or the classic English slipper in velvet with the family crest embroidered. Some of them call to mind our very Italian “Friulane” or “Furlane,” that from the feet of peasant women from Friuli passed to the feet of the gondoliers of Venice, and then became a cult object.

The favorite slippers of Giovanna are Italian, by C.B. Made in Italy, exquisite handmade creations designed by Cecilia Bringheli, a young Milanese designer.

Made in Italy, squisite creazioni artigianali pensate da Cecilia Bringheli, giovane designer milanese.

Giovanna Battaglia: Best Dressed 2011

The eternally chic Giovanna Battaglia was nominated for a number of honors recognizing her inimitable sense of style as 2011 concluded. Among the best was Cathy Horyn's mention in her Top Ten Moments In Style for 2011, I love her description so much that I must include it: "The euro zone may be coming apart at the seams, but Giovanna Battaglia's dress at the Cannes Film Festival held its own. What a dress, what a woman! Ms. Battaglia's vintage Stephen Sprouse gown seemed a delirious cut-and-paste job; the men's blazer worn over her shoulders and the goddess pony tail were a nice finishing touch from a stylist with glamour shooting out of her eyeballs. Her outfit completely killed the rest of the red-carpet looks for the year."

Also interesting was the Daily Beast's list, 2011's Best and Worst Dressed Stars, in which they examine the chic as well as the horrifying. Of course Gio was listed as one of the chic... They were even kind enough to link to us... "An Italian stylist for W magazine, Giovanna Battaglia has become a celebrity on street-style blogs and has developed her own loyal fan base. Now there’s even a blog, I Want to Be a Battaglia, which follows Battaglia and all of her glorious fashion choices — from vintage to Versace, from polka dots to plunging necklines — but always, her signature studded Valentino pumps."

Congratulations, Giovanna! I imagine that I speak for many of us when I say that I anxiously await your sartorial choices for 2012...

Giovanna Battaglia: Migliora vestita in 2011

Giovanna Battaglia: Into The Wild

Giovanna Battaglia created a psychedelic tour de force for the January 2012 issue of W with her black and white editorial "Into the Wild." Amidst the monochrome surreality complete with farm animals and plushies, Chloë Sevigny is the very picture of poise and sophistication as shot by Anthony Maule. The images remind me of the art of Klaus Voormann which graces the cover of one of my favorite albums, Revolver by The Beatles; listen to "Tomorrow Never Knows" while viewing to enhance the psychedelic quality of the editorial. Giovanna Battaglia — one wildly talented stylist!

Giovanna Battaglia: Basel Tov

Thanks to the generous spirit of Jacqueline Nowikovsky, I am delighted to present her personal perspective on the happenings at Art Basel in Miami this year including a chance encounter with Giovanna Battaglia... Che fortuna! Although I must say it is a disappointment to see that Gio has resumed smoking...

Giovanna Battaglia: Basel Tov
By Jacqueline Nowikovsky

The magnetic power of the art fair in Miami Beach is nearly unrivaled — it unites the long-established galleries with the most innovative ones. It draws all the important museums and curators. It attracts the most powerful art collectors and the most significant art dealers. Yes, this year the art fair Art Basel was once again a star-studded event, alluring Sean “Diddy” Combs, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, Adrien Brody, and famous artists like Damien Hirst, Zaha Hadid, Marina Abramovic and many more.

Who would blame them all for wanting to join in — Miami is always a treat: The sun shines while Europe is generally frosted with winterly temperatures and New York lays covered with snow. Another strong incentive might be the incredible array of lavish parties that are hosted by the premiere supporters of the art fair. Yes, Art Basel Miami is also a marathon of party hopping. The W South Hotel was definitely one of the places to be — it is home to The Wall, a nightclub, and offers very stylish suites. So I was not surprised to bump into Giovanna Battaglia in front of the hotel. She looked great and there was a removable lettering on her leg that read “Basel Tov” — probably alluding to the bar-mitzvah-like music played the night before. Summing it all up perfectly: Art Basel Miami is a big celebration.

The Parties

One of the most notable events was the Christian Dior dinner in honor of German artist Anselm Reyle, who has collaborated with Dior on an accessories line. The dinner was hosted by Delphine Arnault, the CEO of Dior and attended by a fashionable crowd, including Giovanna Battaglia, Pharrell Williams, Stefano Tonchi, and Camille Miceli, the creative director of Dior Accessories. Later that evening Giovanna posted a tweet sharing her fascination with Miceli.

Details on the Collection

I had seen the collection in the Dior studios in Paris earlier this year and had been impressed by the way this collaboration had preserved each side's most precious characteristics. They were dazzling, but I was rather concerned when I was told at Dior that they would present these accessories during Art Basel Miami in a pop-up store... Well, I had no idea how cool this pop-up store would turn out to be...

When artists and luxury brands decide to work together, there is always a risk of the result being too commercial or of losing respect for the idiosyncrasy of the artist. But Anselm Reyle and Dior have managed to preserve each one's identity. Reyle is known for shiny materials and flashy neon colors so he applied these to the classical form of the Lady Dior bag and created a camouflage print for a tote. In addition he added geometrically shaped plexi charms to the bags. So how did this translate in the pop-up store? Look for yourself. The pictures tell it all.
