Giovanna Battaglia: Destination... Bahamas?

Recently Giovanna Battaglia teased us with her undisclosed vacation location and our amazing editor-at-large in Italy, Gala, guessed that she was on holiday in the Bahamas. While Gala's article was being translated from Italian to English by the lovely Isabelle Reford, Gio let us in on her secret hideaway... she is actually in St. Barth right now but I wanted to share Gala's delightful work anyway as Giovanna does love the Bahamas and this is a fun insider's glimpse. Dal luogo "top secret" delle sue meritate vacanze, Giovanna Battaglia invia agli amici tramite Twitter un paio di foto degli esotici orizzonti del suo "buen retiro" formato Paradiso, inclusi "beauty secret" per una tintarella con stile. Non sappiamo la location di tale bellezza, ma queste poche immagini mi hanno fatto venire in mente la descrizione minuziosa di una vacanza alle Bahamas di Gio e il suo fidanzato, rilasciata lo scorso anno per MM Magazine Primavera-Estate 2010, semestrale del gruppo MaxMara distribuito gratuitamente alle clienti nelle boutique del famoso brand di pret-à-porter italiano, per il quale lei stessa cura lo styling delle campagne pubblicitarie.Ogni sei mesi, nella sezione "Travel" del Magazine, vi è la simpatica rubrica "Around the world" dedicata al viaggio visto come esperienza di vita, contatto mistico con la natura o puro relax edonista. Ed ogni sei mesi vengono proposte tre donne d'eccezione ed i loro hideways. Proprio in quel numero la nostra Gio, in qualità di fashion editor e globetrotter jet setter alla moda, racconta la sua indimenticabile esperienza di viaggio, che immancabilmente si trasforma in fonte di inspirazione per il suo lavoro. Mi limito a trascrivere fedelmente quanto scritto nell'articolo, per condividere, con le lettrici ed i lettori di IWTBAB, questo semplice racconto che lascia subito una sensazione di "chic" esclusivo e la voglia di prenotare subito il biglietto aereo! Destination... Bahamas?
"Per me l'estate è essenzialmente spiaggia, mare, libertà e relax assoluto". A parlare, al telefono da New York, è Giovanna Battaglia, caporedattore moda di Vogue Pelle e Vogue Gioiello, già modella e musa di stilisti, fotografatissima it girl su tutti i più rinomati style blog e pretty star del mondo della moda. Brillante, sorridente, con uno stile unico (anche se spesso imitato) Giovanna è davvero una globetrotter, sempre in giro tra servizi fotografici, sfilate e appuntamenti mondani. Da vera jet setter, anche le sue ultime vacanze sono state all'insegna del "volo intercontinentale". "La scorsa estate l'ho passata per metà a Stromboli e per metà alle Bahamas. Quest'ultima è una destinazione fantastica, dove non ero mai stata e dove tornerò di sicuro. La prima isola dove sono approdata è Harbour Island, un vero paradiso per chi desidera calma, serenità e un turismo discreto e molto selezionato. Una minuscola isola in perfetto stile vittoriano, dove è piacevole passeggiare tra le case color pastello del piccolo centro Dunmore Town. I punti forti di questa destinazione sono le spiagge semi deserte. Ho notato una peculiarità per quanto riguarda il suo turismo: d'inverno l'isoletta è "americana" e d'estate invece diventa tutta francese! Qui si danno appuntamento, infatti, i grandi nomi della moda e della fotografia made in France. L'aria è totalmente caraibica, rilassante, dolce. Ci si muove solo con le golf car, non esistono auto. L'atmosfera è pervasa dalla gentilezza e dai sorrisi dei suoi abitanti. Per spostarsi da un'isola all'altra dell'arcipelago si usano dei taxi acquatici. Mi è piaciuto molto questo twist così familiare e "très chic". I resort hanno una allure easy, benchè siano lussuosi e ricchi di ogni comfort. Ma è proprio questo che li rende unici, come il Pink Sand Resort, affacciato sulla spiaggia corallina di Pink Sand, spettacolare e famosa per il suo colore roseo. Questo indirizzo è un best kept secret: è stato ideato dalla fondatrice di Biba, Barbara Hulanicki, ed è molto amato dai vip della moda. La sua forza sta nell'essere una location riservata ma amichevole, davvero piacevole. Ogni cottage affacciato sulla spiaggia ha la sua veranda privata ma si passa molto tempo tutti insieme, nella spettacolare clubhouse affacciata sull'oceano. Altro fantastico resort, dove ho alloggiato è l'Ocean View Club. Anche questo è uno "spot" segreto, scoperto da Bruce Weber anni fa. Ci si arriva solo grazie al passaparola, è privo di pubblicità o siti web. La proprietaria Pip Simmons, una chef del Cordon Blue, l'ha creato circa trent'anni fa e offre un'ospitalità top class. Solo nove stanze e tre cottages, con colori Bahamian style e dettagli di legno irlandese. La cosa che conquista di Harbour Island è la sua atmosfera. I colori confetto delle piccole case in legno, il sorriso degli abitanti, i baracchini sulla spiaggia (pink caramella) dove si gusta la prelibatezza dell'isola: l'insalata di "conch", mollusco che si trova in grandi quantità nell'arcipelago delle Bahamas, racchiuso in una grande conchiglia, anch'essa dai toni rosati. Da Harbour Island mi sono poi imbarcata su uno di quei minuscoli aereoplanini un po' scassati che ti mettono il terrore solo a vederli. Non vi dico la paura! Il volo è durato 30 minuti. Direzione Exuma, arcipelago di micro isolette. Il panico da volo è immediatamente svanito quando siamo atterrati: se esiste un paradiso, è questo. Non a caso qui hanno comprato casa (o meglio isole intere, visto che in gran parte sono private): Johnny Depp, l'Aga Khan, Nicolas Cage, Bernard Arnaud, David Copperfield e diversi altri happy few. Oltre agli atolli privati ce ne sono alcuni che si possono affittare : Noi eravamo ospiti di Stavros Niarchos, amico del mio fidanzato, in una di queste piccole perle caraibiche. La sensazione è di essere sospesi nel blu. Non ho mai visto un'acqua più celeste. Spiagge deserte, sabbia finissima, silenzio, natura. E poi divertimento: tra un'isola e l'altra ci si sposta usando dei jet sky: l'effetto complessivo è a metà tra Waterworld e a metà Laguna blu! Passavo le mie giornate in bikini. Bahamas è l'unico posto al mondo dove non indosso i tacchi! Per la sera perfetti gli abiti lunghi di chiffon, da indossare con ciabattine. Per il giorno, parei coloratissimi, grandi cappelli di paglia, micro jeans strappati, T-shirt ampie. Poi, come al solito mi è stato impossibile resistere allo shopping: soprattutto per le borsine di paglia con ricami di scritte colorate "Bahamas". Ne ho prese a decine!".
From the “top secret” location of her well-deserved vacation, Giovanna Battaglia sends to her friends by means of Twitter a bunch of photos of the exotic horizon of her “buen retiro” know as Paradise, including the “beauty secret” for a tan with style. We don’t know the location of this beauty, but the few images brought to my mind the meticulous description of Gio and her boyfriend’s vacation in the Bahamas, released last year by MM Magazine Spring-Summer 2010, MaxMara Group’s bi-annual magazine distributed freely to the clients in the boutiques of the famous Italian ready-to-wear brand, for which Gio herself is in charge of the styling of the publicity campaign. Every six months, in the “Travel” section of the magazine, there is the nice column “Around the World” dedicated to travel seen as an experience of life, a mystical contact with nature or hedonist relaxation. And every six months three exceptional women and their hideaways are profiled. In that issue, our Gio, as a fashion editor and globetrotter jet setter á la mode, describes her unforgettable travel experiences, which she no doubt transforms into sources of inspiration for her work. I limit myself to transcribing accurately what was written in the article, to share, with the readers of IWTBAB, this simple story that immediately leaves us with the sensation of exclusive “chic” and the desire to book a plane ticket right away! Destination... Bahamas?
“For me summer is essentially beach, sea, freedom, and absolute relaxation.” Speaking on the phone from New York, it’s Giovanna Battaglia, fashion editor-in-chief of Vogue Pelle and Vogue Gioello, already a model and muse of stylists, photographed it girl on the most renowned style blogs and the pretty star of the world of fashion. Brilliant, smiling, with a unique style (also often imitated), Giovanna is truly a globetrotter, always travelling among photo shoots, fashion shows, and meetings around the world. A real jet setter, even her last vacation included an “intercontinental flight.” “Last summer I spent half my time in Stromboli and half in the Bahamas. The latter is a fantastic destination, where I had never been and where I will for sure return. The first island where I landed is Harbour Island, a real paradise for someone who wants calm, serenity, and discreet tourism that’s very selective. It’s a miniscule island in perfect Victorian style, where it’s nice to walk among the pastel colored houses of the small center of Dunmore Town. The strength of this destination is the semi-deserted beaches. I noticed a particularity with regards to its tourism: in winter the island is American and in summer it was all French! Here meetings are held, in fact, by the big names in fashion and photography made in France. The air is totally Caribbean, relaxing, and sweet. You can only get around by golf cart, cars don’t exist. The atmosphere is pervaded by the niceness and smiles of the island’s people. To move from one island to another in the archipelago you use water taxis. I really enjoyed a twist so familiar and “très chic.” The resorts have an easy allure, even though they’re luxurious and rich with every comfort. But it’s exactly that which makes them unique, like the Pink Sand Resort, overlooking the coral beach at Pink Sand, spectacular and famous for its rose color. This location is a best kept secret: it was devised by the founder of Biba, Barbar Hulanicki, and is much loved by the VIPs of the fashion industry. Its strength is that it is a reserved location while still friendly, truly enjoyable. Each cottage overlooking the beach has its own private veranda but you still spend a lot of time all together, in the spectacular clubhouse overlooking the ocean. Another fantastic resort where I stayed is the Ocean View Club. It’s also a “secret” spot, discovered years ago by Bruce Weber. You can only reach it by word of mouth; it’s deprived of publicity and of a web site. The owner, Pip Simmons, a chef from the Cordon Bleu, created the club about thirty years ago and offers top class hospitality. There are only nine rooms and three cottages, with Bahamian style colors and details in Irish wood. The thing that wins hearts at Habour Island is its atmosphere. The pale colors of the little wooden houses, the smiles of the people, the booths on the beach (pink caramel) where you can taste the delicacies of the island: “conch” salad, a mollusc that is found in abundance in the archipelago of the Bahamas, enclosed in a large seashell, which is also rose in color. From Harbour Island I then boarded one of those miniature beat-up airplanes that terrify you just by looking at it. I can’t even tell you the fear! The flight lasted 30 minutes. Direction Exuma, archipelago of micro islands. The panic of the journey immediately vanished when we landed: if paradise exists, it’s that. Not by chance, houses (or better yet entire islands, considering that they are for the most part private) have been bought by: Johnny Depp, the Aga Khan, Nicolas Cage, Bernard Arnaud, David Copperfield and various other happy few. Other than the private atolls there are a few that can be rented. We were guests of Stavros Niarchos, a friend of my boyfriend, in one of those little Caribbean pearls. The feeling is of being suspended in the blue. I’ve never seen water more celestial. Deserted beaches, the finest sand, silence, nature. And then fun: between one island and the other you move using a jet ski. The overall effect is half Waterworld and half Laguna blue! I spent my days in a bikini. The Bahamas is the only place in the world where I don’t wear heels! For evening long chiffon clothes are perfect to wear with flip flops. For day, colorful wraps, big straw hats, destroyed micro jeans, loose tshirts. Then, as usual it was impossible for me to resist shopping: especially for straw purses embroidered in colors with the word “Bahamas.” I bought about ten of them!”
